The world suddenly has been plunged into great uncertainty with the reckless killing of Iran’s top general. The repercussions are being felt worldwide, in particular on the oil market. These recent events will be a test as to how strong our resolve is in Canada to get our own oil to market.

It’s now a priority, given Brent crude could go to $100 a barrel or more. Imagine how much it would then cost to drive our vehicles and heat our homes. This comes at a time when heating oil is in peak demand.

The thing is, Iran doesn’t have to do anything other than make threats about destroying key oil infrastructure or closing the Strait of Hormuz (20 per cent of the world’s oil is shipped through this key passage alone). If that happens, Canadians will be screaming to get more of our domestic oil and gas, especially here on the East Coast.

This latest Middle East crisis may be the catalyst to make us realize once and for all it’s time to get a proper national energy corridor in place. Locally, it’ll greatly help our economy, especially now that Northern Pulp is gone. Let’s get those pipelines.
