It is important to share with Nova Scotians an experience 50 of us enjoyed on Sunday, Dec. 1, in  Lunenburg. This adventure leads one to conclude that tourism can be alive and well, even in the so-called off season.

We took a bus tour to Lunenburg. Our tour organizer and guide was historian and teacher Robert Ripley of Halifax. He is a provincial treasure. While this town's beauty and charm markets itself, we were treated to a most amazing historic walk through the old town, music in two of the historic churches, and fabulous seafood in a renowned local restaurant. The commentary and narration was of a calibre beyond anything my wife and I had experienced on tours to Europe and the United States.

This is December, but it demonstrated loud and clear that small towns like this one can be open to tourism throughout the entire year. With public washrooms closed, even the local funeral home opened its doors for a washroom stop and served coffee to us all. Everywhere we visited, the friendliness of this little town was evident.

Thank you to all. A job well-done! We are proud to call ourselves Nova Scotians.

P.H. Edwards, Halifax
