Antigonish native Dave Van Den Heuvel is the new offensive co-ordinator for the St. F.X. X-Men football program.
“I am extremely excited to be continuing my career here at St. F.X. and taking my coaching experience to the next level,” Van Den Heuvel said in a Jan. 30 press release from St. F.X. Athletics.
“I am thankful for the opportunity, and I am very much looking forward to working with the coaching staff and student-athletes moving forward as we strive for excellence with the X-Men football program.”
While earning his mechanical engineering degree at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Van Den Heuvel played offensive line for the Gaels for three seasons.
After returning home, he completed an education degree at St. F.X. in 2011.
Van Den Heuvel started his coaching career with the Dr. John Hugh Gillis Regional High School Royals and joined the X-Men staff in 2014.
X-Men head coach Gary Waterman is “extremely pleased” about the appointment.
“Dave is a hardworking coach with a creative and innovative mind. His past experience with the St. F.X. football program, Football Nova Scotia and Football Canada make him an ideal candidate to join the X-Men coaching staff on a full-time basis,” he added.
Van Den Heuvel, who takes over for Warren Goldie as offensive co-ordinator, will begin his coaching duties February 1.
