The Dr. John Hugh Gillis Regional Royals Division 2 boys’ basketball team captured their second tournament title of the new season.    

In the championship game at Hants North Rural High, Nicholas Dayman of the Royals finished with a double-double – 28 points and 18 rebounds – in a 99-68 victory over the host Hants East Tigers.    

Anthony Sears finished with 18 points and five rebounds, while Martin Puga Sieiro added 16 points and five rebounds.    

Leo Grenier and Nathan Dayman chipped in 13 and 10 points, respectively, while Dayman contributed six steals.    

The Royals opened the tournament with a 105-48 win over the Bridgetown Hawks.    

Puga Sieiro led five players in double figures, with 20 points, while adding five assists and five steals.    

Nicholas Dayman finished with a double-double – 19 points and 15 rebounds – along with seven assists and six steals.    

Nathan Dayman added 18 points and five rebounds; Sears, 16 points, six rebounds and seven steals; and Cole MacDonald, 11 points and seven re bounds.    

In a 68-58 victory over the host Flames, Nathan Dayman had 23 points and five steals, with Nicholas Dayman adding 20 points and eight rebounds.

Tame the Panthers 

The Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation (NSSAF) Division 2 defending boys’ basketball champions captured another early-season crown in a tournament hosted by the Sackville Kingfishers.

In the championship tilt, the Royals shaded the Park View Panthers 74-72.    

Sears, the player of the game, finished with a double-double – 22 points and 12 rebounds – along with five assists.    

Nicholas Dayman collected 17 points, five rebounds and four blocks, while Nathan Dayman chipped in 11 points, six rebounds and five steals.    

Puga Sieiro added 11 points, six rebounds and four assists.    

Peter Duff garnered the sportsmanship award for the Royals.    

The Royals opened the tournament with a 61-53 victory over the Colonel Gray Colonels of Charlottetown.    

Player of the game Jordan Phee and Nicholas Dayman finished with 22 points apiece, while Dayman completed the double-double with 12 rebounds.    

Freshman Nathan Dayman collected the player-of-the-game nod, on 18 points and five rebounds, in an 86-60 win over Eastern Shore.    

Puga Sieiro, with 12, Leo Grenier (11) and Ben Anthony (10) also finished in double digits.    

Grenier added seven rebounds.

Scoring burst

In their Northumberland Region season opener, the Royals erased a 10-point (65-55) third-quarter deficit, on the strength of a 28-2 scoring spurt, in a 96-90 victory over the Northumberland Nighthawks of Alma, Pictou County.    

Nicholas Dayman, with 32 points and six rebounds, and Phee, finishing with 27 points and five rebounds, led the Regional.    

Sears contributed 15 points and eight rebounds.

The Royals’ roster for this season includes Grade 12, Martin Puga Sieiro; Grade 11s, Cole MacDonald, Jordan Phee and Christian Vitug; Grade 10s, Nicholas Dayman, Peter Duff, Anthony Sears, Czai Pangan, Leo Grenier, Tyler Pictou and Adil Rahman; Grade 9s, Nathan Dayman, Ben Anthony and Liam Walker.
