Get ready to hit the trail for the Ceilidh Coastal Trail 5k walk-run.

The event, which will travel a section of The Great Trail – formerly Trans Canada Trail – along the west coast of Cape Breton, will take place Saturday, Aug. 25.

Registration will take place, starting at 8 a.m., at the Creignish Recreation Centre, with race time set for 9 a.m.

The event is open to all ages and abilities.

“This year, we hope to meet or exceed last year’s attendance,” Laureen Murphy, one of the organizers, said in an email.

Last summer, she noted, a similar event marked the completion of The Great Trail.

“The number one goal of the trail association is to promote the trail,” she said.

“There is a very dedicated group of volunteers, who work tirelessly to ensure the trail is in top-notch condition.”

Murphy added proceeds from the event will help fund ongoing maintenance and repairs.

“Members of the association have been busy preparing by canvassing local businesses for sponsorship and donations,” she said.

“The response has been remarkable and the Ceilidh Trail Association is truly grateful.”

She noted a list of sponsors will be posted during the walk-run.

Piper Ian Cameron will lead participants to the start line on the trail by the Creignish Recreation Centre.

“It is a flat, well-groomed trail and the scenery is spectacular, hugging the coastline with stunning views of St. George’s Bay,” Murphy said.

Medals with be awarded for first and second place, in various categories, and dry-fit T-shirts will be available for the first 75 registered participants.

After the walk-run, there will be refreshments at the Creignish Recreation Centre, where draws will be made for a wide selection of prizes provided by local businesses.

Organizers said everyone is welcome, whether as a participant or a spectator.

Registration is $25.
