GLACE BAY, N.S. — The Strait Richmond Bantam ‘AA’ Pirates team finished the Cape Breton ‘AAA/AA’ League regular season in a close, second-place position, but peaked at the Cape Breton Cup championship and took home the 2019 Cape Breton (CB) Cup and banner.

The team earned the title with a 5-3 win versus the Glace Bay Miners in the championship game.

The Pirates finished the round-robin at the CB Cup with a 3-0 record and met the Cape Breton West Islanders in the crossover game, which they won 4-2.

The victory set-up a “very exciting” championship game versus the Miners, where Pirates received two goals from Ethan Bernard and singles from Ethan Donaldson, Grant Cameron and Jack Taylor, on their way to the win.

Second-year goalie Daniel Mombourquette had another strong performance to backstop the Pirates to the victory.

Several team members picked up individual awards at the league banquet, including; Mack Martell - rookie of the year, Donaldson - first-team all-star defence, Trent Diggdon - second-team all-star forward and coaches’ award, Jake Sampson - second-team all-star goalie, and Taylor – rookie all-star forward.

The “hard working” Strait Richmond Pirates and the Glace Bay Miners will represent the Cape Breton region at the Nova Scotia Bantam ‘AA’ Provincial Championship in Yarmouth April 11 to 14. The team is “optimistic and looking forward to their next challenge.”

The Pirates are led by captain Donaldson (Port Hawkesbury) and assistant captains Leo MacLean (Port Hawkesbury), Diggdon (Arichat) and Dylan Campbell (Port Hawkesbury).

The team is coached by John Campbell along with “very capable” assistants Sheldon Beaton and Rob MacDonald. John Allan Murray is team trainer and Dawna Donaldson team manager.
