The backbone of HFX Wanderers FC's defence will remain intact for another season.
German centre-back Peter Schaale re-signed with the Canadian Premier League team on Thursday after a strong rookie season that saw him serve as captain on several occasions.
“It’s a great feeling,” Schaale said in a news release. "I had a great time last year and a great connection with my teammates, the city and the fans, so I’m happy to come back."
The Wanderers selected Schaale fifth overall in the 2018 U SPORTS draft. He appeared in 21 games but had to leave the team before the end of the season so he could return for his final season at Cape Breton University.
He helped the Capers win a fourth straight AUS championship and captured a second consecutive league MVP award.
“He was an integral part of the team last year not only on the field but a leader off the field with the way he carried himself,” Wanderers head coach Stephen Hart said in a news release. “He showed the necessary leadership to be named captain and he was not afraid.”
Schaale is the seventh confirmed returnee from last year's team, joining Christian Oxner, Akeem Garcia, Andre Rampersad, Scott Firth, Alex De Carolis and Chrisnovic N’sa under contract. The team has also signed striker Ibra Sanoh of the Holland Hurricanes and Montreal Carabins duo Omar Kreim and Aboubabacar Sissoko.
