Panthers defeat X-Women to move into first place in AUS standings

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Jenna Mae Ellsworth and Annabelle Charron each scored 12 points as the UPEI Panthers defeated the St. FX X-Women 74-50 Friday in Atlantic University Sport women’s basketball action.

Kimeshia Henry added 10 while Reese Baxendale and Lauren Fleming each scored nine as the Panthers won their eighth straight game. Jane McLaughlin and Fleming both had seven rebounds while Karla Yepez dished out five assists.

Katie MacIntosh had 10 points and 11 rebounds to lead the X-Women while Leah Fahey had 10 points, seven boards and three blocks.

UPEI held quarter leads of 23-14, 48-22 and 61-40.

The Panthers improved to a conference-leading 10-1 while gaining four points in the standings to take a two-point advantage over Cape Breton (10-1). The X-Women (0-11) are in the basement of the eight-team conference.

UPEI hosts Dalhousie Sunday at 1 p.m. in another four-point game.
