SYDNEY, N.S. — Ivan Ivan scored with 1:16 left in overtime to lift the Cape Breton Eagles to a 3-2 win over the Charlottetown Islanders in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Wednesday.
The teams were tied after a scoreless third period in front of 2,245 fans at Centre 200. Shaun Miller finished with a goal and an assist, while Nathan Larose added a single.
For the Islanders, Nikita Alexandrov scored both tallies, including a power-play marker in the first period.
In goal, Kevin Mandolese made 30 saves for the win to improve his record to 5-1-0-0 on the season. Matthew Welsh stopped 27 shots as he fell to 5-1-2-0.
The win improved Cape Breton’s record to 8-3-0-0 for 16 points, one back of the Islanders (7-1-3-0) for top spot in the Eastern Conference.
Cape Breton returns to the ice Friday when they host the Halifax Mooseheads (7-4-0-0) at Centre 200, a 7 p.m. start.
