WESTVILLE ROAD, N.S. - New Pictou County Crushers defenceman Christian Tsao was the target of a racial slur in a Dec. 8 game against the Yarmouth Mariners.

Mariners’ Daniel Surette was penalized with a gross misconduct and received a six-game suspension by the Maritime Junior Hockey League the next day.

Pictou County won the game 6-2.

A stay-at-home blueliner, Tsao, who is of Asian descent, is a native of Los Altos, California, and was acquired recently from the Edmundston Blizzard.

“It was an unfortunate incident and the league handled it accordingly,” said Crushers general manager Chad McDavid, who added that that the Yarmouth coach and GM, as well as Surette, all made a personal apology to Tsao after the second period.
