Sydney Academy boys move on to Highland Region soccer final

SYDNEY, N.S. —

The Sydney Academy Wildcats posted a 3-1 win over the Glace Bay Panthers on Wednesday at Open Hearth Park to advance to the Highland Region boys’ soccer championship series.

Isaac Rhynold fired two goals while Christian LaCorella netted a single. Pascal Baykara replied for Glace Bay.

Sydney Academy now faces Riverview starting Saturday at Riverview field in Coxheath at 1 p.m. The teams play again on Sunday at noon at Steelman’s Memorial Field in Sydney.

In girls’ action, the Riverview Reds blanked Sydney Academy 10-0 to setup a meeting with the Breton Education Centre Bears for the Highland Region banner.

Allie MacLeod and Ayanna MacNeil scored three goals each, Ashley Ross netted a pair, while Erin Beaton had a single to go along with an own goal. The shutout was shared by Anna Sampson and Mariah Herve.

RHS and BEC will meet for the championship series Saturday and Sunday.

The BEC Bears junior varsity girls also moved on to the Highland Region championship after a 5-0 win the Memorial Marauders.

Isabella White scored twice, while Emma Noseworthy, Olivia Sweeny and Hannah Barry also struck. Brooklyn Antle had the shutout.

The Bears will play RHS at Veterans Memorial Field in New Waterford at 10 a.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. at Steelman’s Memorial Field on Sunday.
