Sydney Rush pick up first win of the season

The Sydney Mitsubishi Rush scored a season-high seven goals in their first win of the season on Sunday at the Membertou Sport and Wellness Centre.

After starting the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League season with an 0-9-1-0 record, the Rush offence came to life in Sunday’s 7-4 victory over the visiting Valley Wildcats (6-7-0-0).

After Nick Mahar scored Sydney’s first goal, Drew MacIntyre, Brandon Clarke and Coby McCarron each scored a brace to pace the Rush, while Lucas Fraser stopped 29 of the 33 shots he faced. Sydney outshot the Valley 37-34.

On Saturday, the Wildcats defeated the Rush 5-2. Logan O’Neil and Trey Sturge scored for Sydney, while Jack Cashen shouldered the loss after stopping 34 of 39 shots.

Cape Breton’s other entry in the league, the West Islanders, dropped both weekend contests. On Saturday, the Islanders fell 7-3 to the Cole Harbour Wolfpack before losing 7-4 to the Dartmouth Midgets on Sunday.

Liam Trenholm, Daniel Gillis and Dave Matthews scored for Cape Breton (2-8-0-0) against Cole Harbour, while Luke Hadley with a pair, Trenholm and Brant Timmons scored for the Islanders against Dartmouth.

The Rush and Islanders face off Thursday in Port Hood.
