SYDNEY, N.S. —

Derek Gentile's breakaway goal at 7:31 of the third period proved to be the game-winner as the Cape Breton Eagles downed the Halifax Mooseheads 5-3 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action at Centre 200 on Friday.

With the win, Cape Breton snaps Halifax's five-game winning streak, while extended their own win streak to three straight games.

Ryan Francis, Ivan Ivan, Egor Sokolov and Shaun Miller added single markers for the Eagles (9-3-0-0) in front of 3,357 fans in attendance.

Patrick Kyte, Zack Jones and Raphaël Lavoie replied with goals for the Mooseheads (7-5-0-0).

William Grimard made 38 saves for Cape Breton. Alexis Gravel turned aside 27 of 32 for Halifax.

Cape Breton's top line opened the scoring with Francis scoring his fifth goal of the season with assists being awarded to Sokolov and Shawn Boudrias at 9:22 of the first period. Ivan made the score 2-0 for the Eagles before the period was over.

After a scramble in front of Grimard, Mooseheads defenceman Kyte would net his second goal of the season to cut the Eagles lead one, but Cape Breton responsed before the period was over with Sokolov regaining the two-goal lead with his 10th of the season.

In the third period, the Mooseheads came out firing, scoring a pair of quick goals off the stick of Jones and Lavoie to tie the game 3-3.

Gentile's breakaway goal would put Cape Breton in the lead 4-3, a marker which was followed by a Miller goal at 14:49 of the final stanza to seal the deal for the Eagles.

Halifax out shot Cape Breton 41-32, while going 0-for-5 on the power play. The Eagles went 0-for-4 with the man-advantage.
