Royals cross country competes in Maine

ANTIGONISH, N.S. — The Dr. John Hugh Gillis Regional High School cross country program recently made its annual trip south of the border.    

The Royals competed in the 18th Annual Maine Festival of Champions Cross Country Meet, Oct. 5, on the 5k course in Belfast, Maine.    

The Regional athletes raced against some of the top runners from New England in the largest high school meet for the region, which includes more than 1,900 athletes from more than 80 schools.

The Royals’ girls garnered third place, in a field of 60 teams that included 645 runners, trailing only second-place Bonny Eagle High School of Maine and Harwood High School of Vermont by one and three points, respectively.    

Siona Chisholm of the Regional finished second, clocking a 18:08, while Mairin Canning also raced to a top-10 finish (sixth), with a 18:42.    

Anna Robinson finished 13th, while garnering top spot in the freshman race, while Mariah Austen placed ninth in the first-year competition, in 20:30, and 46th overall.    

Malia Artibello (90th, 21:30), Hannah Austen (165th, 22:35), Anna MacGillvray (204th, 23:01), Maura Flynn (254th, 23:30) and Sarah Vanderlinden (267th, 23:40) also ran for the Regional girls’ side.
