The Cape Breton West Islanders of the Nova Scotia Eastlink Major Midget Hockey League announced, in an Aug. 6 press release, that Nick MacNeil will be joining their coaching staff for the upcoming season.
MacNeil, a native of Creignish, is a former assistant captain with the Islanders.
He was also a former draft pick of the QMJHL’s Cape Breton Screaming Eagles where he enjoyed four strong seasons.
After finishing his major junior career, MacNeil joined the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds where he was instrumental in UNB winning two CIS (now USPORTS) national titles. He also won a World University Games’ gold medal in Trentino, Italy, in 2013.
MacNeil has spent the past three seasons playing professional hockey in the East Coast Hockey League; first with Bakersfield (Calif.) and then in Norfolk, Virginia.
MacNeil joins second-year head coach Kyle MacDonald, and assistant Kyle Gillies, as they prepare for the upcoming season.
MacNeil replaces Willie MacDonald who has moved into an assistant coaching role with the MHL’s Pictou County Jr. ‘A’ Crushers.
